playboy in the national election. Oh, I forgot that Junior is a nouveau Evangelical now but still a dumb one. Everyone knows that Junior isn't pulling the strings in DC, it's his draft dodging neocon buddies who are calling the shots!

John Kerry will be serendipity for Vietnam Veterans who were not afarid to answer the call. All of the Beltway chickenhawks better standby when Kerry comes to town as Commander-In-Chief because evil only prevails when good men do nothing. Junior will be a 1 termer just like his daddy. I await comments from all the brave right-wing hypocrits who never attached a bayonet to their weapons!

Lt. Dan - most likely you will be accused of being a liar when it comes to service in Viet Nam. My advice is to just ignore it.

Kerry is a brave and heroic man.

Bushie is a war evading, genocidal, spoiled alcoholic cokehead brat that should be sentanced to death by a war tribunal for his years of genocidal mass murders and crimes against humanity.

Pat,

I guess that's a compliment to how cunning Kerry really is - like in Nam when he reached down to pluck a Green Beret out from the water(who turned out to be a lifetime Republican) under fire, for which he won the Silver Star, I guess all along he was most likely thinking, "What a boon to my political career - can't wait to cash in on that mutherfvcker".

Talk about self-serving: what do you think Bush was doing when he went AWOL on his National Guard tour after he called in favors to get jumped in front of people who were more deserving to get in the Guard (a la Dan Quayle)?
And this from our tough talking president who just proclaimed himself the "War President", the same guy who declared, "Bring 'em on" to refer to the speculation where al queda operatives were migrating to iraq to attack American forces.

Beautiful - war dodger attempting to exude bravado while exhorting al queda to attack our troops. If he was a democrat, you hypocrites, i mean republicans, would be demanding he be tried for treason.

Patriot,

What have you ever done to earn your sobriquet?Punks like you hide behind the mantle of freedom that was provided for you by brave men like John Kerry! You apparently listen to EIB too much. At least Kerry has medals to throw. The Vietnam Veterans Against the War policy was to either fight the war to win or get out.

Freedom has the flavor that the protected will never know!

Snorting blow and avoiding the newly instituted military drug testing which went into effect at that time.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how pay records necessarily show that he served. They show he got paid, not that he served. I doubt he'd be the first person to ever get paid for something he didn't do. Let's not forget the pedigree of this kid. Does anyone really think they would have fvcked wit this kid even if he didn't do his job?

Out of curiosity, does a candidate stand a better chance of winning an election if they served in some branch of the military than if they had not? Does military service endear them to the public? And, if so, why?

X & D,

Whether a person served or not is not the issue w/ Junior. The documentation (not legible) presented by the Gestapo Press liar today still leaves a 7 month gap in Junior's SRB. This punk is a liar.

The military issue is only one of the many issues that has led to Junior's downfall. The American people will not need 9 more months of war and lies to boot this idiot out of office. If Junior was smart, he would retire to the bunker w/ Cheney and stay out of sight until election day.

Lt: I really wasn't referring to Bush in particular with my line of questioning. I'm actually wondering how important it is to American voters (say, on a scale of 1 to 10) that their incumbent has a military background. Just a curiosity thing. Not that I've done a survey on this here, but I don't think anyone would give a shit if our PM had served or not. Just comparing.

The last 11 Chief Executives have served on active duty except Cinton and Junior. Junior was selected by the SC over Gore who was a real Veteran.

Joint, I only have a 1 arm and you better stop playing w/ your joint so much. Start cracking the books a little more.

X,

Years ago it probably could have been a liability, but now with everyone trying to be the toughest on defense, it's a plus.

For Lt. Dan, Wil and a lot of other veterans of that war, the issue drives more to while these guys served, rich guys like quayle, bush, cheney who now portray themselves as the "War President" and tough on defense - it strikes at their credibility that they all dodged the war when they had a chance to go but are not hesitant to belligerently say, "Bring 'em on" when today's troops are in harm's way.

Lt. Dan,

You made mention of right wing hypocrites who never served in the military. Would those be right wingers like Robert Dole, J.D. Hayworth, George Bush Sr., Colin Powell, Chuck Hagel, Wayne Gilchrist,Jeff Sessions, Duke Cunningham, etc, etc...You mean those right wingers? I guess in your mind only left wingers can be in favor of war? Or is it only people who have served in the military who have the right to support a war?

And using your logic where you call people punks and cowards, does that make everyone who did not serve in the military a coward? Even if they were never drafted or came of age after the draft was ended? I think you'd find there are plenty of people who have not served in the military who have plenty of courage. Not foolish courage that claims to not fear death...only a fool would not be afraid as you very well know if you served, but the courage to face that fear when the time came.

And as a complete seperate matter, I was wondering if you have an opinion as to why so many of the current rank and file military people are Republicans while so many from your generation are Democrats?

Lt. Dan,

And in another post, you claim that Al Gore was a real veteran. Well, technically you are correct, but he had about as much chance of getting killed as George W. Bush did...maybe less considering Bush was flying jets while Gore was spending 18 of his 24 months in the Army on a US military base IN the United States. When Gore was finally shipped off to Vietnam 1.5 years into his term of service, he acted as a JOURNALIST and saw no combat. His own best friend from the military has claimed that Gore never fired his weapon and rarely carried it.

And as for your point about Presidents who have not served in the military, it's just plain stupid. No fewer than 12 US Presidents never served one day in the military, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and James Polk, all three of whom led the United States into wars, all three of which did excellent jobs as Commander in Chief. Also, some of the most successful Presidents in the history of this country served only nominal military roles (Lincoln, Reagan, Madison) that were largely ceremonial. So using your standard for a legitimate War-time President, FDR should not have gotten the US involved in World War II and Wilson should not have gotten the US involved in World War I...pretty stupid conclusions, wouldn't you say?
